Choosing the right pixel pitch is one of the most important decisions when specifying an LED digital display.
Pixel pitch affects image clarity, viewing distance, display resolution, and overall cost. Choosing a pitch that is too large for the intended viewing distance can make individual pixels noticeable, while selecting an unnecessarily fine pitch can increase the cost of the display without providing a meaningful benefit at longer viewing distances.
So, how do you choose the right pixel pitch?
The starting point is understanding where the screen will be installed and how close the audience will be to it.
What Is Pixel Pitch?
Pixel pitch is the distance between the centres of two adjacent pixels on an LED display, measured in millimetres.
It is commonly expressed using a "P" followed by the distance (e.g. P1.53 = 1.53mm pixel pitch, P10 = 10mm pixel pitch).
The smaller the pixel pitch, the closer together the pixels are. This generally allows the display to produce a more detailed image at shorter viewing distances.
Smaller pixel pitch = pixels closer together
Larger pixel pitch = pixels further apart

Why Does Pixel Pitch Matter?
Pixel pitch directly influences how an LED display appears when viewed from different distances.
When you're standing close to a display with a large pixel pitch, individual pixels can become noticeable. At a greater distance, however, those pixels visually blend together, and the image can appear clear.
A smaller pixel pitch allows viewers to stand closer to the screen before individual pixels become noticeable.
This makes smaller pixel pitches particularly useful for indoor displays and applications where viewers will be relatively close to the screen.
Larger pixel pitches can be appropriate for large outdoor displays viewed from a greater distance.

Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance
Viewing distance is one of the most useful factors when choosing pixel pitch.
As a general guide:
| Pixel Pitch | Approx. Minimum Viewing Distance | Approx. Best Viewing Distance |
|---|---|---|
| P1.53 | 1.5m | 3m+ |
| P1.86 | 1.8m | 4m+ |
| P2.5 | 2.5m | 5m+ |
| P2.9 | 3m | 6m+ |
| P4 | 4m | 8m+ |
| P6.67 | 6.5m | 13m+ |
| P10 | 10m | 20m+ |
These figures should be treated as general guidelines rather than fixed rules. Actual viewing performance depends on the display technology, content, screen size, brightness, environment, and viewer expectations.
The manufacturer's specifications should always be used when making a final selection.
Smaller Isn't Always Better
It's easy to assume that the smallest available pixel pitch must produce the best result.
However, pixel pitch should be selected according to the application.
If a large outdoor screen is going to be viewed primarily from 20 metres away, using an extremely fine pixel pitch may provide little noticeable benefit to the audience.
Conversely, if a display is installed in a retail environment where customers may stand only two or three metres away, a large pixel pitch may make individual pixels more noticeable.
The goal is to select a pixel pitch that is appropriate for the intended viewing distance.
Consider Where the LED Screen Will Be Used
The environment in which the display will be installed is just as important as viewing distance.
Indoor LED Displays
Indoor screens are often viewed from relatively short distances.
Common applications include retail stores, shopping centres, showrooms, corporate spaces and boardrooms, reception areas, exhibition displays, museums, and hospitality venues.
Because viewers may be standing close to the screen, fine pixel pitches such as P1.5, P1.8, or P2.5 may be appropriate depending on the application.
Outdoor LED Displays
Outdoor LED screens are often installed where viewers are further away.
Examples include building façades, outdoor advertising, stadiums, public spaces, public spaces, shopping precincts, and large-format signage.
Larger pixel pitches can be appropriate when the audience is further from the display.
For example, P4, P6.67, or P10 may be considered for applications with longer viewing distances.
The required brightness, weather protection, and viewing conditions also need to be considered for outdoor installations.
Content Matters Too
The type of content being displayed can influence the appropriate pixel pitch.
A screen displaying large graphics, simple animations, or bold text may not require the same pixel pitch as a display showing detailed photography, fine text, product imagery, or intricate video content.
If your content contains a lot of fine detail or small text, a finer pixel pitch can help preserve that detail when viewers are relatively close to the display.
Choosing the Right Balance
The right pixel pitch is ultimately a balance between viewing distance, image requirements, screen size, environment, and budget.
A fine pixel pitch isn't automatically the right choice, just as a larger pixel pitch isn't automatically unsuitable.
Instead, consider the actual viewing conditions and select a display that provides the required image quality at the distances your audience will experience.
