Acrylic FAQs

Acrylic is the general name for polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA. Perspex® is a registered brand of acrylic sheet, although the name is often used informally to describe acrylic products. Uniqlas® is SAS Supplier Group’s range of acrylic sheets.
Clear acrylic provides high transparency, while solid acrylic blocks or substantially limits light transmission. Translucent acrylic allows some light and colour to pass through, while opal acrylic is designed to diffuse light more evenly. The right choice depends on the required visibility, privacy, colour and lighting effect.
Opal acrylic is commonly used for lightbox faces because it helps diffuse LED light and reduce visible hotspots. Translucent coloured acrylic can be used when a specific illuminated colour is required. The best option depends on light transmission, LED spacing, cabinet depth and the brightness required.
Selected acrylic sheets are suitable for outdoor signage and displays, but suitability varies between colours, finishes and product ranges. UV exposure, weather conditions, thermal expansion and the installation method should be considered. Confirm outdoor suitability before using fluorescent, mirror or other specialty acrylic products externally.
Yes. Cast acrylic is widely used for laser cutting, CNC routing and engraving because it can produce clean shapes and detailed lettering. It can also be drilled and fabricated, provided the correct tools, machine settings and allowances for material movement are used.
The appropriate thickness depends on the panel size, support, application, fixing method and expected load or wind exposure. Thinner sheets may suit supported sign faces and display inserts, while larger, freestanding or structural applications generally require greater thickness.
