Acrylic sheets, also known as plexiglass, are flat transparent thermoplastic polymers with a chemical name of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA), suitable for use as impact and scratch resistant light-weight alternative to (coloured) glass, with typical density less than half of glass. Acrylic panel is sometimes laminated on top of polycarbonate (PC) to combine the scratch resistance of acrylic and the impact strength of PC.
Acrylics differ in their polymerisation processes, and their chemical compositions of co-monomers. The highest grades are produced by cell casting – polymerisation and moulding occur concurrently that produces extremely high molecular mass.
As part of the thermoplastics family, acrylic boards can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated again without significant degradation. Instead of burning, thermoplastics like acrylic liquefy, which allows them to be easily injection moulded, compression moulded or extruded for recycling.
When instead heated to softening point at glass transition temperature, the material can be bent and folded with ease. It stays at the intended shape after cooling without losing its transparent or translucent light properties.
Common uses of Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) include (coloured) windows, partitions, enclosures around exhibits, safety screening, signages, internal linings, materials, assemblies, and attachments to ceilings, non-loadbearing internal walls, common walls and external walls. It is also commonly used for office partitions, shop partitions, and partition walls.
